Snow
It’s white, it’s cold, it’s wintry. It’s often associated with a lot of fun:
winter sports (also linked to a big economic factor), snowman/woman making, making snow angels, snowball fights and general cosiness!
I am actually in the snow for a few days (after a horrendous week of parent/kid flu), and the snow here got me thinking. Why snow matters, and how is important to our planet?
Why snow matters
👉Snow is highly reflective, so when sun rays hit a snowy area, they are reflected back into space. This helps cool our planet 💦
👉A huge 80-90% of sunlight is reflected back out via snow
👉 Snow controls heating and cooling on our planet more than anything else on land does
👉 But reflective snow needs to be white. Dirty snow can be created through wind dust, as a result of farming, construction and forest fires. It reflects much less and melts the snow quicker in spring.
👉Snow can even become a source of electricity⚡. It can potentially be harnessed in two ways: cold/hot convection or catching snow directly as it falls
