The Veganuary Challenge!

The importance of plant based eating

A Falafel Burger & a Chaï Latte with Oat Milk, Please!

The Veganuary* challenge attracted 25 million globally this year – a massive figure!

👋My contribution, as always, is more of a marathon style – with our own ‘vegan Wednesdays’ (which my family and I keep up throughout the year – minus when we’re away on holiday).

Even though the challenge is no longer, plant-based eating is a thing all year round. 📅

👉 *What is Veganuary?

Strictly speaking, it’s being vegan for the month of January. But it’s more about raising awareness of plant-based eating and trying out lots of vegan meals
(Veganuary is a non-profit that has been running for 10 years)

👉Why is plant-based eating important for our planet?
Here is a relatable fact: 📖
-1kg of beef = 70kg of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted
-1kg of wheat = 2.5kg of GHG emitted

Another fact: 📖
Almost 60% of GHG = from animal-based foods
-Compared to 30% from plant-based foods

👉What are some of the things that make animal-produce harmful?
– Land for grazing & for livestock crops (for feed)
– Water for cattle consumption & for produce processes
– Methane from animals
– Treating animal produce, transport, freezing
– Making, maintaining & running equipment…

👉What’s the advice?
So, it’s not to become vegan but to be mindful of what you eat. Reduce red meat intake (scores the highest on the emissions list), but also eat more local/organic produce and whatever is in season 🌱

💡I leave you to think about which diet you associate with the most. As for me, I’m a vegetarian.
