Third Biggest Country?

Food Waste’s Massive Climate Toll

Is it the third biggest country?

Is it the third biggest emitter?

Almost. Food waste and loss emit so much that, if a country, it would rank third after the US and China.

A third of all food produced for people globally is wasted or lost. This is a staggering environmental problem.

Where is food wasted?
Waste happens between harvest and retail. It also occurs in retail outlets, restaurants, cafés, canteens and households.

Because food waste is so huge, there’s a dedicated day
Stop Food Waste Day was on 24 April. Eight percent of global greenhouse gases come from food loss and waste.

Waste but a lack
While huge amounts of food are wasted, millions still face hunger. Saving wasted food could feed 1.26 billion people.

Who’s the winner?
Households waste the most food — 60% of all food loss and waste comes from households. This is avoidable.

Solutions
Retailers can accept “imperfect” food — odd size, too big or too small. This stops unnecessary waste at the source.

Start-ups like PimpUp rescue unwanted food from producers and sell it to households. Look for a local initiative near you.

Restaurants and shops can link with charities to donate unused food. Food-sharing apps like Olio let neighbours share surplus.

At home, plan meals based on food you already have. Save leftovers for the next day or turn them into sauces.

Stale bread makes breadcrumbs or pudding. Use celery leaves as herbs. Compost organic waste at home or through local services.

Scrappy Cooking by PlantYou is a great guide for using every part of your produce. Small changes make a big difference.
