COP30 in Brazil: Can the Amazon Host Deliver Real Climate Action?
COP. A yearly spotlight on the state of our planet, coupled with well-intended plans.
We all know it’s not going really well.
This year, the event is being held earlier than usual, from 10–21 November. Its location? Belém, Brazil, right in the Amazon. 🌳
Will this be the COP of action?
Here are a few things we can expect from COP30 in the Amazon.
🌳 Brazil is hoping for action
- Brazil’s president has pledged $1 billion to start the new Tropical Forests Forever Facility. This is a global fund to conserve tropical rainforests.
- Brazil expects countries and private corporations to invest $125 billion in total.
- China has already signalled early investment interest.
- Brazil will also put forward an emission-reduction proposal to speed up global decarbonisation.
👉 Other notable announcements
- Climate ministers are called upon to act on four priority areas, as announced by the ICC and the UN Climate Change Convention.
- Last month’s Climate Change Conference in Africa will shape COP30 to create an investment-ready African climate agenda, according to the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa.
- Pope Leo XIV spoke of the urgency of climate change and condemned inaction at the Raising Hope Conference. He urged people worldwide to pressure politicians.
- Massive Attack, already leaders in climate-conscious touring, will perform during COP30 in São Paulo with Brazilian metal band Sepultura. Both bands are partnering with Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon for this show.
- Prince William will attend this year’s COP, aiming to push talks toward real action.
Even our local newspaper published a headline story on COP30. It highlighted hopes that the summit will echo COP21 in Paris, exactly ten years ago!
🔥 But why is mass deforestation still happening?
- Huge private banks are still making billions from deforestation each year.
- Vanguard, JPMorgan Chase, and BlackRock continue to invest despite the zero-deforestation-by-2030 pledge signed at COP26.
Can COP30 in the Amazon make a difference?
We can only wait and see.
We need action instead of greed.
